Innovative liver cancer treatment now available on Vancouver Island

An advanced therapy that targets tumors with a high dose of focused radiation while sparing surrounding healthy tissue is now available in the Island Health region, providing another potential treatment option closer to home for liver cancer patients. The treatment, referred to as transarterial radioembolization, or TARE for short, uses tiny beads containing radioactive material to slow down the growth of liver tumors and help alleviate symptoms. Mussel Flex Keeps Freshwater Ecosystems Healthy

Freshwater mussels breathe rivers clean. They are also sensitive to changes in the environment, which puts them at substantial risk. They and the habitat they require are disappearing at a discreet rate. Their presence in lakes and ponds is indicative of high water quality. Their absence tells a different story. The latter is the more familiar tale. Rhode Island’s populations of mussels have been degraded by a long history of damming and pollution discharges into rivers. Lake populations have been largely eliminated by basin reconfigurations, pollution, and urban development, according to a 2006 study. Between 1980 and 2006, Christopher Raithel…Continue Reading
